Discover the beautiful regions of Santander and Boyaca in this 12 days tour riding paved roads through the country. Visit the lovely town of Villa de Leyva and surroundings, National Park el Cocuy, try some extreme sports in San Gil and fell in love with the great Chicamocha Canyon. We will leave Bucaramanga to enjoy a nice ride to Malaga, a lovely town with a nice square and a beautiful church. Expect paved and unpaved roads on the way that will add more adventure and challenging times to the tour. It will be quite an adventure in the mountains with great scenery.
After breakfast, we will be heading to the town of Guican. This town is located near the national park El Cocuy and is the main hub for active travelers. If you are into hiking, you will find El Cocuy one of the best destinations for the most eagers hikers, with the chance to hike for about 5 or 6 days in it. The roads have less traffic that in other places, so you can enjoy the surroundings at your own pace.
We will get to the ranger station of the park with the motor bikes very early in the morning. Get ready for a challenging and amazing climb that will take us around 5 hours. Keep in mind that it´s is quite high there (4.000 m up from sea level) so please tell our traveler´s experts in advance if you need any assistance or arrangements to your plan. The day will be a great experience with snowy mountains at the top of the hill and beautiful views.
The ride to Paipa is a nice one with beautiful scenery. Paipa is the perfect destination if you are looking for some relaxation and time to spoil yourself. With many centers for mud therapy, hydrotherapy, saunas, steam baths and massages, it is difficult not to disconnect and pamper yourself while enjoying the local gastronomy and the low temperatures.
Our next destination will be Lake Tota. The lake was Sacred by the Muisca culture and played a role in the history of the indigenous group. Nowadays, the lake is surrounded by lovely towns and green countryside where the people that live there are mostly farmers that grow potato, onions and peas.
It will be an amazing ride to the historical city of Villa de Leyva. We will be driving through the Sanctuary of Iguaque on an altitude of around 3500 meters. The landscape is unique and you will have the opportunity to admire the variety of plants, mountains and valleys on the way. After few hours, we will take a rest at the 14.000 square meter plaza of Villa de Leyva, a town that was founded in 1572 and was built by the Spanish conquerors.
Enjoy the day on your own exploring the town. You can walk around town, visit an ostrich farm, go to Santa Sofia where you will be able to see the most complete marine reptile dinosaur, stop at the Muisca observatory or do a small trip to Raquira. This town is the pottery capital of Colombia and you can find the best craftsmen of the country and get lost in the lovely market. Admire the hand-woven bags, sweaters and other goods that are not easy to find anywhere else. Please let us know if you would like us to plan the trip to Raquira for you.
Expect a ride of about 6 hours on the main road between Bogota and Bucaramanga before arriving to Villanueva, where we will be staying for a couple of days in a traditional farm. The road is all paved so it will be a relaxing ride to the Santander region. You will have the chance to share your impressions of Colombia with people who own and run the farm.
The next destination will be San Gil, the capital for extreme sports in Colombia. Our traveler´s experts are happy to assist you on the numerous activities to do there. You can go rafting, horse-back riding, paintball ,mountain biking, caving, kayaking, abseiling, see waterfalls and many more. After a day full of excitement, we will enjoy a nice bbq dinner at the farm.
We will visit Barichara, labeled as the most beautiful village of Colombia due to the charming buildings that are built from mud and white washed by craftsmen. Get a feeling of the place by enjoying a walk around the town, the shops full of handicrafts, bags and souvenirs.
This will be our last riding day. The Chicamocha canyon is 227 kilometers long and 2 kilometers deep. The canyon has spectacular views and one of the longest cable cars in the world that go all the way down through the canyon. We will stop a couple of times to take some photos and to enjoy a delicious breakfast looking over the canyon. After enjoying this spectacular place, we will be riding for another 54 kilometers to Bucaramanga, where we will have our last lunch together.
